MWUTT 40: What are Christians to do with Pride Month? (1 of 2)

Welcome to our episode of Men Who Understood the Times. I'm Michael with Sam Helwig and Phil Hahn. So Sam is brand new to the podcast, so Sam, if you wanna introduce yourself to our viewers and listeners. Just tell us where you serve, where you live and, you know, your family life and so forth.

Yes. So I was assigned to af- uh, out of the seminary to Our Savior Lutheran in Perry, Michigan. And Perry is halfway between Lansing and Flint. So if anyone is familiar with Michigan, uh, if Perry's on the exit, you- on 69, you get off to go up north, uh, on 52. So that's where Perry is. Uh, and it's about 2,000 people, and there's little other towns. We live in Morris, which is another 2,000 people or so nearby, um, just a couple minutes away. Uh, and the church is a little on the small side. It's... Uh, we get about 50 or 60 people average on worship. Um, and so it's enough to keep me busy certainly. Um, and this is only my, my third year here, and, uh, I have, I have four girls. Actually, you have four girls as well.

I do have four girls.

That's another thing we share in common.

Yeah.

So we have four girls. We had our most recent girl born in November, so kinda b- kind of a full house lately. So that's me.

Well, fan- yeah, fantastic. So here's, here's some encouragement for you, Sam, with four daughters. So when I moved to Racine, I only had three daughters, and one of the ladies there, uh, Elaine, uh, she and her husband Norm had three daughters. And then we had our fourth one while we were there, and she said to me, "Pastor, uh, I just want you to know that God thought that you were man enough to be the only man in your house."

Yeah. Yeah.

So there you go. And-

Well, God willing, we'll, we'll keep trying. We'll see what happens. We'll, you know-

There you go

... we'll, we'll take whatever we can get, um, in the future.

Yeah.

We'll see.

Yeah. And the only, the only sad part about having girls is that they're not into Star Wars as much other- like a boy might. Other than that, they're fantastic. In fact, uh, they were- they're all in their 20s now, and they were texting me Happy Father's Day this morning. And Lydia, my third daughter, s- uh, said, "Happy Father's Day, Dad. I love you bunches." And I said, "I love you also, Lydia." And I texted her a gold medal 'cause I said, "You were the first one of your sisters to wish me a Happy Father's Day." And said, "Oh, good. I'm your favorite." And- 'cause that's the big thing- ... with the girls. And I said, "Well, you're not my favorite. You're just the winner." And she said, "Well, I'm your favorite third daughter." I said, "Yes." And then Miriam called just a little while ago. She won the prize for calling her dad first on Father's Day. Uh, Phil, I know you've been on the podcast before, but do you wanna explain to our listeners too, uh, your rocket science and, you know, not blowing up rockets and so forth?

Yeah. So unfortunately, we blew up a rocket about a month ago. But other than that, yeah. So I'm, I'm just a Lutheran layman from Alabama.

And then our disclaimer that, you know, we're two pastors and a layman on Father's Day when we're recording this. And, uh, y- like the last episode, I said, "Well, we may not know what we were talking about when we were talking about Supreme Court decisions." Although if you listen to Pastor Hagan, he definitely knew what he was talking about.

Yeah.

And with this one, uh, this episode, both Sam and Phil had given suggestions on, uh, what to talk about, and so much so that this is gonna be a two-parter, and we're gonna be talking about, uh, what are Christians to do with Pride Month. And as Christians, uh, again, two pastors and a layman, I think we're probably pretty qualified to be able to say what scripture says, uh, even though we're not speaking officially for our churches and church body. Before we get into it, uh, Sam, you're in your church office. It's late at night. What are you drinking?

I've got some Earl Grey tea this evening.

If I, if I was at home, I would have a vodka tonic for what it's worth-

Um, I home brew, and this is a, uh, hard cider with, uh, cinnamon and anise.

Oh, my goodness. You're gonna have to bring me some hard cider-

Yeah

... when you come, when you come visit.

Yeah.

And, and my wife for Father's Day made me a margarita.
